Abbott tries to move past latest gaffe - Ninemsn

August 13, 2013: Tony Abbott left his daughter Frances and Liberal candidate for Lindsay Fiona Scott blushing after promoting Scott's "sex appeal" at an interview while campaigning in the western Sydney suburb of Penrith.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott will be hoping his late night contrition over a "sex appeal" remark about a Liberal candidate has stemmed further criticism of his attitude toward women.

Mr Abbott's gaffe came when campaigning in the marginal seat of Lindsay in western Sydney on Tuesday and a reporter asked how Liberal candidate Fiona Scott compared with her coalition predecessor Jackie Kelly.

"They're young, they're feisty and I think I can probably say have a bit of sex appeal," he replied, sending social media commentators into meltdown and drawing denunciation from Labor.

Back-peddling later in the day, Mr Abbott said he been "a bit exuberant" when championing the qualities of his "good mate" Ms Scott.

Already out of favour with female voters, and with a record of gaffes about the role of women, Mr Abbott will be hoping his latest blunder doesn't gain traction.

Both Mr Abbott and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will begin campaigning in Queensland on Wednesday.

August 12, 2013: Opposition leader Tony Abbott has mistakenly used the word "suppository" while describing Kevin Rudd's style of leadership.
