Coalition leads ALP 51-49: Galaxy poll - Ninemsn

Another opinion poll suggests the coalition is in front, one week into the federal election campaign.

The Galaxy poll, published in News Corp Australia newspapers on Sunday, puts the coalition on 51 per cent and Labor at 49 per cent on a two-party preferred basis.

Primary support for the ALP is down two points to 38 per cent while the coalition is up one point to 45 per cent, the poll says.

The survey of 1002 voters, taken between Wednesday and Friday, also asked respondents what they thought were the major party leaders' greatest weaknesses.

About a third (31 per cent) replied that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's greatest weakness was "his record in government" while 28 per cent said Opposition Leader Tony Abbott "isn't prime minister material".

Mr Rudd and Mr Abbott go head to head in a leader's debate at the National Press Club in Canberra on Sunday night.
